Oh, I actually have a base for this already saved! I was working on it a while ago. It still needs some work but I'll get to it as soon as possible! XD
The door slamming made Aaron tense. He heard nothing behind his back which meant that Spencer waiting for him to turn. He'd been expecting this of course, he'd gotten scared earlier and acted unprofessionally. It seemed Spencer had taken offense. Since they where sharing a room, Aaron didn't think it was possible to avoid this argument so, reluctantly, he turned.
"Do you want to tell me exactly what that was?" Spencer asked in a clipped tone.
Deciding against admitting he was in the wrong, mostly because he didn't feel he was, Aaron shrugged and said, "I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about. All I saw was a unit chief reprimanding a reckless subordinate."
Spencer looked like he'd been slapped. Not hurt, ooh no. He looked Pissed. Off.
"Are you kidding me?" He hissed.
"You knew it was dangerous to go in there and you did it anyway. You endangered yourself and the rest of the hostages, not to mention ..."
"No!" Spencer yelled, before pressing his lips together, calming himself, "That, I understand. I acted rashly - saving the life of everyone in that school by the way. You had to chew me out for that. I understand that. But do not try telling me your actions were professional." He sneered at the last word.
"I'm the unit chei..."
"Oh PLEASE!" His lover yelled, "That was NOT Agent Hotchner who screamed at me in front of the whole team, all the LEO's AND about half a dozen news camera's. That was Aaron, and that is who I'm pissed at. You made it personal."
Aaron snapped. He threw his briefcase on the bed and yelled, "Well, what the hell do you expect? You just go running off into god knows what, AGAIN! And then expect me to keep it together?"
"That's the idea Aaron." Spencer was pacing now, "That's why we're two different people; Aaron and Hotch, Spencer and Reid. We're supposed to be professional. I was! I always am. If you can't handle that then we really shouldn't be together."
"Yeah, well maybe we shouldn't be." Aaron screamed.
Spencer stopped pacing, he was looking at Aaron in shock, "What?" He asked quietly, no longer yelling.
Aaron was shocked too, he hadn't meant that. He had just responded automatically, "Spencer, I didn't mean that."
But his lover was already walking out of the door. Again it slammed and again Aaron winced.
"You jackass" He mumbled to himself, tugging at his short hair in anger. Anger at himself.
Aaron had taken a second to compose himself before heading down to the lobby to find Spencer but he hadn't been there. He hadn't been in the bar either and a glance into the parking lot showed the car still there.
Returning to the room, Aaron intended to call him but was interrupted by a knock at the door. When he opened the door he was surprised to see Morgan there.
"Hey." He said tiredly, not really feeling up to a social call.
"What did you do?" Morgan looked suspicious but otherwise mostly worried.
Aaron didn't pretend not to know what Morgan was talking about, "We were arguing about earlier and, I said something stupid that I didn't mean. Is he in your room." He took a step forward with the hope of convincing his lover to forgive him when he was stopped by Morgan.
"Whoa whoa, he's not there. He was but he said he needed to clear his head. Come on, I think I need a drink and I know you do." Morgan said, ushering him into the room.
Aaron rubbed his hands over his face and up into his hair, "When we used to fight, Haley and I, we'd throw the word divorce around like it was nothing. I didn't mean it, I .. "
Morgan handed Aaron a glass of scotch, sat on the bed and said, "Why don't you start from the beginning. Reid didn't actually tell me anything."
Aaron sighed and sat on the other bed, "He was pissed, he accused me of acting unprofessionally, said that I acted as his lover as apposed to his boss."
"Okay, firmly on Reid's side so far." Morgan shrugged at Aaron's scowl, "Sorry man, but .. that was pretty brutal."
Closing his eyes, Aaron couldn't help but chuckle bitterly, "Yeah. I know."
"Understandable," Morgan was quick to add, "But, brutal."
"Yeah." He breathed, "Then he said that if I couldn't be professional we couldn't be together and I agreed. I really didn't mean it, they were just words."
Morgan looked at him for a few moments, before sighing and saying, "Look man, I don't know what you're gonna do to fix this, but I know that he's out there right now convincing himself that you meant every word, that you don't want to be with him. That boy's brain may be our best weapon in building a profile, but it's also his worst enemy. You've gotta go get him."
Aaron looked down at the drink he really wanted, nodded and handed it to Morgan, "Thanks."
As he picked up his jacket and headed to the door, he was stopped by Morgan calling his name, "If you guys make up, try to keep it down okay? I'm only down the hall and I really don't wanna hear that."
Aaron laughed, but promised.
He ran down the stairs, not wanting to wait for the elevators and rushed into the parking lot. As he reached the car, he ran past the back door to the front but stopped. Had he seen what he thought he saw?
Stepping back, he looked through the window into the back seat and saw Spencer, laid along the seats, curled up under his coat, crying. Aaron's heart broke. He'd done that.
He opened the door and Spencer immediately jerked up into a sitting position, wiping his eyes to hide any evidence he'd been crying, eventually giving up and just turning to face the other door, his whole body twisted away from Aaron.
Sliding in and closing the door, Aaron placed a hand on his lover's arm, "Spencer. I'm so sorry."
"It's okay," Spencer shrugged, "It was never going to last, nothing ever does." The words were said with such a tone of acceptance that Aaron could barely stand how much he hated himself at that moment.
Sliding closed, Aaron hold on to Spencer's arm and rested his chin on the man's shoulder, "I didn't mean it. The last thing in this world I want is to loose you. That's why I reacted the way I did this afternoon. I wasn't mad, I was petrified. When I saw you walk into that school, when I heard those gunshots, I felt like my heart had stopped. I cannot lose you Spencer. Please, forgive me. I didn't mean it, they were just words." He buried his face in Spencer's neck.
Sniffing, Spencer hushed, "They weren't just words to me."
Aaron nodded, "I know. I'm sorry."
"I mean, if that was your automatic response, maybe it's what you really want." He sounded so sad.
Shaking his head, Aaron said emphatically, "No, Spencer no. There isn't a single part of me that wants that. You have to believe me. Trust me."
Finally turning in his arms, Spencer looked deep into his eyes, and said quietly, "I don't want to loose you either." He smiled slightly, before adding, "I'm sorry too. I'm just not used to having something to think about first."
Aaron frowned, "What do you mean?"
Spencer pursed his lips before answering, "You know? You have Jack and your brother, Morgan has his sisters and his mom, JJ has Henry and Will, Rossi has dozens of close friends. Even Prentiss has Sergio. I'm just not used to having someone I have to think about leaving behind if I die."
Aaron was beyond disturbed. Was this really how Spencer thought. He decided to go the easy path first, "What about your mom?"
His lover looked down and shrugged, "She wouldn't notice. It's not like I ever visit and they'd just drug her until she forgot."
Wincing at the callous way he referred to the concept of his mothers grief, Aaron took Spencer's face in his hands and urged him to meet his eyes, "Spencer. I never knew you felt this way. You have to know that you are our family. As soon as you left Morgan's tonight, he came straight to me to find out what went wrong and to try and fix it. JJ, Prentiss and Garcia would literally tear apart anybody who ever hurt you. I'm serious, they would rip him to shreds." Spencer laughed at that, mostly because of how true it was, "And Rossi pretty much thinks you're the son ... well nephew he never had, he's not that sentimental."
Another laugh.
"And I would blow apart earth, heaven and hell just to bring a smile to your face. And I happen to know for a fact that your mother would claw the face of anyone who hurt you in the slightest. I know that because when you where in the bathroom the first time I met her, she was very serious when she told me that's what she'd do if I ever hurt you."
Spencer chuckled again, looking stunned, "Oh my god. Seriously?"
"Seriously. It was terrifying." Aaron said seriously. He may have faced the sickest bastards in the world without blinking, but a maternally protective Diana Reid? Aaron had almost had to change his pants.
Spencer's laugh was deep and long as he buried his face in Aaron's chest. Wrapping his arms around his lover, he held him close, "You may not be used to thinking of the people you'd be leaving behind, but we've always been there. And we always will be."
Lifting his head from Aaron's chest, Spencer smiled, "I'm sorry. I'll be more careful in the future, I promise."
Aaron smiled back, "I'm sorry. I'll be more professional in the future. I promise."
OP here. This is wonderful. I think it's sad that Spencer sees himself that way, but I can totally picture it because that's who he is. Thank you so much for filling this one.
i can so see this happening! because reid sometimes does put himself in harm's way without thinking about the consequences. i'm glad they made up at the end :)
